A Prospective Study on Postsurgical Opioid Use After Complex Elective Foot and Ankle Surgery
Description
Elizabeth Pedersen presents her research on post-surgical opioid use after complex foot and ankle surgeries. She discusses the prevalence of chronic post-surgical pain and highlights the risks associated with prolonged opioid use, including the potential for abuse and related medical issues. The study involved patients who underwent foot and ankle surgeries between June 2017 and January 2019, using the brief pain inventory to assess pain locations, intensity, and impact on daily activities. Findings indicate significant correlations between preoperative opioid use and postoperative opioid reliance, with alarmingly high odds ratios for those who used narcotics regularly before surgery. The research aims to help identify at-risk patients and promote opioid weaning strategies to minimize prolonged use.
