A Review of Radiology Reports From Hip Surveillance X-Rays Completed in Community Hospitals

Description

In this presentation, Stacey Miller discusses a review of radiology reports related to hip surveillance X-rays for children with cerebral palsy in British Columbia. The Child Health BC Hip Surveillance Program aims to identify and address hip displacement in affected children early on by facilitating local imaging and referral to pediatric orthopedic surgeons through a network that spans the province's extensive geography. The study analyzed 1,846 AP pelvis images from community and specialized hospitals between 2015 and 2019, focusing on how well migration percentages—key indicators of hip displacement—were reported. Results indicated that while reporting was sufficient in specialized hospitals, it was significantly lacking in community settings, leading to conclusions that existing radiology reporting practices are inadequate for effective hip displacement detection. Recommendations were made for improved education on the importance of migration percentage tracking among radiologists to enhance early detection and treatment.
