Are Patient Reported Outcomes Measures Comparable Between Surgical Hip Dislocation and Arthroscopy in the Treatment of Femoro-Acetabular Impingement: A Propensity Matched Study With Minimum 5 Year Follow-Up
Description
In a presentation by orthopedic surgeon Kevin Smit, the focus is on a research paper examining the outcomes of two surgical methods—surgical hip dislocation and hip arthroscopy—in treating femoro-acetabular impingement (FAI). This condition leads to joint abnormalities causing pain and arthritis. The study, which uses data from a single surgeon's database over a minimum of five years, involved a cohort of 399 patients that were propensity matched to ensure comparability between the two surgical groups. Findings indicated no significant difference in survivorship or patient-reported outcomes between the two surgical techniques, both demonstrating good mid-term results. Notably, complications such as infection rates did not significantly differ between groups. The study emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and a surgeon's comfort with chosen surgical methods, suggesting that both approaches are safe and effective in treating FAI.
