"Are Patients’ Outcomes of Function, Pain, and Quality of Life, the Same Whether or Not Patients Followed Post-Operative Precautions After THR?” A Randomised Controlled Trial

Description

In this presentation led by Justine Theaker, the focus is on the precautions following hip replacements and their effects on patients' quality of life, pain, and function. Funded by the NIHR and the Manchester University Foundation Trust, the session aims to shed light on evolving surgical practices since the introduction of hip replacements over 50 years ago. Theaker discusses findings from two studies: the 're-hip1' study, which highlighted that a notable 37% of patients did not adhere to post-surgical precautions, and the subsequent 're-hip2' study. The data revealed that non-adherence correlated with positive outcomes in pain, function, and quality of life, challenging longstanding precautionary protocols. However, this change in practice raises concerns for patient anxiety, as those who were aware of not following typical precautions experienced increased fear of hip dislocation. The analysis includes various measures, such as the Oxford Hip Score, pain ratings, and patient satisfaction, while acknowledging recruitment challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The overall message emphasizes the need for careful management when transitioning away from traditional precautionary measures to alleviate patient anxiety while improving recovery outcomes.
