Diabetic and Charcot Foot for Orthopaedic Exams
Description
This is a webinar session focused on a critical teaching module related to the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS). The session is hosted by the FRCS mentor group and presented by Abdullah Hanoun, a surgeon from Yeoville Hospital set to relocate to the Manchester area. The discussion centers on diabetic foot and Charcot joint as important clinical presentations that surgeons must understand for both exams and practice.
The presentation highlights the increasing incidence of diabetic foot due to diabetes and emphasizes the importance of understanding the intricacies of its management, including the cost implications and the types of ulcers (neuropathic, ischemic) that can occur. It encourages attendees to engage actively by asking questions and participating in discussions. The presentation also covers assessment methods such as the use of the monofilament test for sensory loss and the ankle-brachial index (ABI) for vascular assessment. Additional topics include various classifications for diabetic foot ulcers like the Wagner and Sinbad systems, and guidelines on treatment strategies ranging from conservative to surgical options.
Following the formal presentation, an interactive Q&A format is led by a moderator, where attendees are encouraged to discuss key details and clarify their understanding. The session aims not just to impart knowledge on diabetic feet and Charcot joints, but to equip participants with practical knowledge to prepare for exams and improve real-world patient management.
