Establishing Normative Relationship of Spinopelvic Alignment to Femoroacetabular Orientation

The study's objective is to obtain measurements of spinopelvic and femoroacetabular parameters in a cohort of 386 healthy young adults (ages 20-39) who participated in a larger investigation of global spine alignment. This selection process specifically excluded individuals with previous spine or lower limb pathologies, ensuring the study assesses normal spinal-pelvic and femoral-acetabular dynamics. Participants underwent advanced 3D reconstructions of whole-body scans to characterize spinal pelvic parameters, including pelvic incidence and tilt, as well as femoral acetabular parameters such as acetabular inclination and anteversion.
The results reveal that acetabular inclination remains stable across varying pelvic incidence and tilt, with an average measurement of 55.5 degrees identified in the study. It is also noted that changes in pelvic tilt correspond with significant alterations in acetabular anteversion, highlighting the importance of this relationship in the context of preparing for hip arthroplasty, especially when accounting for degenerative spinal changes.
The presentation concludes with an acknowledgment of the study's contributions to the understanding of femoroacetabular and spinopelvic alignment, emphasizing that this knowledge may improve surgical outcomes and reduce complications in hip and spine interventions.
