Discharge after Hip Fracture Surgery by Mobilisation Timing: Secondary Analysis of the UK Hip Fracture Database

Description

In this presentation, Katie Sheehan, a physiotherapist and UKRI Future Leaders Fellow from King's College London, discusses her research focused on hip fractures, particularly utilizing the National Hip Fracture Database. She emphasizes the importance of early mobilization (within 36 hours post-surgery) for older adults who have undergone hip fracture surgery, which could significantly lead to reduced complications and earlier hospital discharge. She examines data from over 135,505 patients, finding that those who mobilized early had a much higher discharge rate compared to those who mobilized late. Despite certain limitations in her study, the findings suggest a two-fold increase in the chances of discharge by 30 days for patients who were mobilized early, highlighting the potential need for incorporating early mobilization into the UK Best Practice Tariff system to improve patient outcomes.
