Dr. Nicholas Colyvas is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He specializes in minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder, with particular interests in meniscus preservation and repair, meniscus transplant, and complex arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery. He has extensive experience in treating athletes of all types, from professional to amateur. He also serves as team physician for local rugby and football teams. Dr Colyvas' main research and interest is in the field of meniscus preservation. He investigates cutting edge techniques in meniscus repair, with the goal of delaying or preventing knee arthritis in the long term. He has helped develop new techniques and meniscal repair devices. He is also active in improving outcomes and techniques for meniscal replacement. Dr Colyvas grew up and completed medical school in Africa. He then completed a as a residency in orthopedic surgery and fellowship at UCSF. He went on to a busy private practice for twenty years, and ultimately rejoined as full faculty at UCSF. He is board certified in both Orthopaedic Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Surgery. Dr Colyvas is active in the Orthopaedic community and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, where he served on their Practice Management committee, and continues to give talks and instructional course lectures. He also served on the board at the California Orthopaedic Association and is a frequent speaker and moderator at their conferences. Dr Colyvas is an active member of the AOSSM, where he is involved in their teaching activities in skill assessment and education conferences. He frequently lectures and leads labs at local and national meetings. Dr Colyvas also is involved in surgical robotics and is actively working with a team helping to develop robotic assisted Arthroscopy to improve the field and improve outcomes. On a day-to-day basis Dr Colyvas enjoys teaching Fellows, Residents and Medical Students at UCSF, as well as assisting his colleagues in challenging and complex knee and shoulder surgeries. In his free time, he enjoys time with family, and has a passion for motorsport. He races many types of cars both locally and internationally.
