What Are The Outcomes of Hip Preservation Surgery In Patients With a Pre-Operative Quality of Life ‘Worse Than Death’?: A Study Using The NAHR Dataset
Description
In this presentation, KH Sunil Kumar discusses the outcomes of hip preservation surgery for patients reporting quality of life scores worse than death, derived from data in the National Joint Registry (NAHR). Kumar highlights that a significant portion of patients (65% with EQ-5D scores above zero) achieved minimal clinically important differences (MCIDs) postoperatively compared to only 51% from the worse than death group. The study analyzes preoperative and postoperative data from January 2012 to October 2020, encompassing 17,000 patients, including those undergoing hip arthroscopy and periacetabular osteotomy. The results show that psychological impairments significantly affect surgical outcomes, emphasizing the need for early and effective intervention strategies, especially in light of increased mental health struggles during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the retrospective nature of the study and limitations in capturing mental health data, the findings suggest that timely management and appropriate counseling are essential for patients with severely diminished quality of life.
