Cementation Techniques in Knee Surgery: A Delphi Consensus Study

Description

In this informative presentation, Vivek Balachandar, an ST7 surgeon from Yorkshire, introduces the CeTIKS study, the first expert consensus recommendations in the UK focusing on segmentation techniques in knee arthroplasty. Balachandar highlights the critical issue of total knee replacement failures, primarily due to aseptic loosening, specifically tibial loosening, as recorded in the National Joint Registry reports. He contrasts the established practices found in hip surgeries with the lacking consensus in knee replacements, underlining the significant need for expert opinion due to insufficient research evidence.

Through a Delphi protocol, the study encompassed a thorough literature review leading to the formation of 25 consensus statements across four domains, achieving agreement on 24 of them with expert input from a diverse national group of 79 surgeons. Balachandar details specific recommendations on cementing techniques essential for enhancing surgical outcomes, emphasizing meticulous preparation and application processes to reduce the risk of loosening. The presentation concludes with a call for acknowledgment of the contributions made by participating experts, reiterating the pivotal role of expert consensus in addressing knee replacement failures.
