Description
This presentation, delivered by Rosie Wall, outlines the efforts of the UK Guyana teaching partnership, particularly in the realm of clinical examination training for Guyanese orthopedic trainees. Rosie introduces herself as an STD7 in the West Midlands Warwickshire Deanery and notes that she is presenting on behalf of Mr. Jenner, who is currently recovering from surgery, and Mr. Ali, who brings extensive experience in clinical examination teaching. The partnership was established to address the shortage of consultants in Guyana capable of delivering effective training in clinical examination, especially given the resource constraints in the country.
Rosie elaborates on Guyana as a low to middle income country with ambitions to develop its orthopedic training program. The UK Guyana teaching partnership was launched to fulfill the need for comprehensive teaching; with only a few full-time consultants in Guyana, the partnership developed a series of virtual teaching sessions via Zoom to facilitate the education of Guyanese trainees twice a month.
The presentation outlines the methodology used in clinical examination teaching, highlighting its importance in a resource-limited setting where advanced imaging technology is not readily available. Rosie explains that clinical examination skills are crucial for diagnoses, thus the emphasis on teaching these skills is particularly significant within the program.
Educational techniques employed include pre-sentations on examination steps and virtual demonstrations of examinations, followed by interactive discussions. There have been assessments of trainees' clinical examination skills, feedback has been positive, and evidence suggests that virtual learning can effectively teach clinical skills.
Looking ahead, there are plans to expand the training topics to cover additional systems beyond just hips, knees, and ankles. Rosie concludes by inviting anyone with an interest and expertise in clinical teaching to participate and contribute to the program.
