How To Support Clinicians and Enable Them to Carry Out Clinical Research (BOA ResComm CTU Session): BSCOS - Research Rags To Research Riches
Description
In this presentation, Dr. Daniel Perry, a children's orthopedic surgeon, shares his journey in conducting successful research within the field. He admits to being double-booked and humorously apologizes for his mix-up, before diving into his experience with NIHR funded studies. He reflects on a failed study from 2014, which led him to rethink the approach in children's orthopedic research. Instead of continuing with complex trials that the community was not prepared for, he transitioned to an observational study, known as the BOSS study, fostering collaboration among 143 hospitals and involving a significant number of patients and healthcare professionals.
Dr. Perry discusses the importance of community involvement and collaboration in research, explaining how they secured 95% of SCFE (Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis) cases in the UK. He recounts how engagement with NIHR and its leaders allowed him to gain insights into funding processes and research priorities. He emphasizes that when presenting ideas to funding bodies, the collective voice of patients and healthcare providers is far more impactful than that of an individual surgeon.
Through collaborative efforts, the BOSS study was able to grow and lead to significant funding for various studies. Dr. Perry provides tips for aspiring researchers, stressing the importance of building partnerships and understanding the language of funding organizations. His passionate appeal for collaboration in research culminates with an invitation for anyone interested to reach out for guidance, underscoring his commitment to advancing children's orthopedic research.
