Establishing the Normal Range of Movement for Dart Thrower’s Motion at the Wrist in an Adult Cohort

Description

This presentation by medical student Magdalena Markiewicz at the University of Edinburgh discusses a study aimed at establishing the normal range of movement for dart thrower’s motion (DTM) at the wrist in a healthy adult cohort. The significant findings include that DTM, which encompasses wrist movements from radial extension to ulnar flexion, was examined across a sample of 326 participants aged 18 to 45 years. The study revealed median values for DTM: 72.4 degrees for radial extension, 51.5 degrees for ulnar flexion, and a total DTM arc of 122.7 degrees. Factors such as sex and age were analyzed for their influence on DTM, with results showing that females exhibited a greater range of motion compared to males, while older participants showed a decrease in range. The study's methodology included blind measurements taken with a goniometer and ensured high reliability in the data collection process, indicating manual goniometry’s effectiveness in assessing wrist motion. The outcome provides a valuable reference for clinical assessments in managing wrist pathologies.
