Description
This presentation features a speaker, Sarah Stapley, who recently transitioned out of a career in the Navy, after 33 years, to become a trauma and orthopedic consultant at Portsmouth University Hospitals Trust. In this talk, she provides insights into her experience as a consultant surgeon, her role as the Training Program Director for Wessex, and the diverse makeup of her trainee cohort. She discusses the changing demographics within the field, emphasizing the importance of both gender and ethnic diversity among surgical trainees. Moreover, Stapley highlights the successes and ongoing challenges faced in promoting inclusivity within orthopedic surgery, such as the low representation of women and ethnic minorities. She reflects on her own journey in a traditionally male-dominated field and shares the significant influences of her mentors who paved the way for her success. The presentation also touches on statistical data regarding recruitment trends, diversity progress in training programs, and the importance of role models to inspire future generations of surgeons.
