Advanced Staged Ankle Arthritis

Description

The patient in this vignette is suffering from advanced staged ankle arthritis without significant deformity. Current treatment options like ankle arthroscopy show limited long-term benefits. Alternative methods, such as distraction arthroplasty with a ring fixator, are noted to be inconvenient for the patient and also offer limited success in terms of long-term outcomes. For cases where deformity is an issue, supramalleolar osteotomy may provide a more reliable long-term solution. The options discussed include fusion and total ankle replacement, with the patient expressing a preference for retaining ankle range of motion. Among the available procedures, total ankle replacement is expected to result in the least reduction of the patient's ankle movement.
