Ankle Arthrodesis

Description

Mr Donatas Chlebinskas give his expert insights into Arthrodesis which is a preferred treatment method for addressing deformities linked with ankle arthritis. The technique of arthroscopic fusion boasts an impressive union rate of 90% to 97%, accompanied by quicker recovery times and reduced incidence of wound complications. This method proves effective even in cases involving severe deformities, particularly when there is potential for articular correction or the use of additional osteotomies.

Conversely, open fusion techniques—including trans-fibular and combined approaches—achieve a union rate between 93% and 100%. These open methods are especially recommended for cases exhibiting over 15 degrees of varus or valgus deformity, or significant bone loss, as they facilitate the processes of osteotomy, bone grafting, and provide enhanced rigid fixation.
