BOA Congress Plenary Session: Training Across the World

Description

Karen Chui, a Trauma Network Registrar and President of the British Orthopedic Trainees Association, guides the audience through the nuances of orthopedic training in the UK. She introduces her presentation by outlining the training process from medical school through surgery to higher surgical training, highlighting the challenges and benefits of rotational training across different hospitals within the UK healthcare system.

Miss Chui discusses key advantages, including exposure to diverse patient demographics, subspecialties, and adaptability through site rotations that foster various competencies. However, she paints a contrasting picture regarding the cons of this training model, citing significant financial burdens on trainees and the negative impacts on physical and mental health from the demanding nature of the program. She emphasizes the struggles trainees face in establishing stable lives due to constant relocations, leading to challenges in personal relationships and well-being.

The presentation touches on the psychological and emotional toll that comes from the intensity of training, with statistics indicating a majority of trainees feel burnout. Yet despite these challenges, trainees expressed an enjoyment for their work and a commitment to their careers.

Miss Chui ends by addressing the need for improvements in the training environment, promoting changes in the structure and support within the medical education system. She calls for reforms such as decreasing rotational demands and financial pressures, while advocating for professional support for trainers. All reinforced with a heartfelt thank you to those supporting the next generation of surgeons.
