Biologics in Day to Day Practice

Description

In this video presentation, Adam Watts discusses the role of biologics in orthopedic practice, citing the various clinical targets for biological therapies, including the treatment of osteoarthritis, non-unions, and musculoskeletal injuries. He addresses the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which has shown varying and often inconclusive results in clinical studies, particularly in relation to osteoarthrosis. Evidence suggests that PRP has no clear advantages over placebo and limited benefits in comparison with hyaluronic acid. He further examines the challenges associated with meta-analyses due to the variability of PRP formulations.

Watts also reviews the limited efficacy of biologics in acute fracture management and fracture non-unions, emphasizing that autologous bone grafting remains the gold standard. He discusses the Masquelet technique, which involves the use of a cement spacer to encourage new bone growth in cases of significant bone defects. This technique has shown promising outcomes with high union rates in similar cases.

Throughout the talk, Watts underscores the need for improved research and reporting standards in biologics to better understand their efficacy and mechanisms. He concludes on a note of optimism about future biological therapies that might involve combining different modalities and innovative cell therapies, aiming to enhance patient outcomes in orthopedic settings.
