British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgery (BOFAS) Registry

Description

In this presentation, Nilesh Makwana, Chair of the British Foot and Ankle Society Clinical Practice Committee and consultant surgeon, discusses the development and impact of the BOFAS Registry on foot and ankle procedures within the NHS. He emphasizes the importance of tracking surgical outcomes, having initiated the registry in 2014 to improve the quality of care by allowing surgeons to analyze their outcomes and variations in practice.

Over the years, the registry has expanded to include various procedures beyond the initial two pathways (metatarsophalangeal joint and ankle fusions) to encompass a wider range of elective and trauma surgeries. Makwana notes that NICE has acknowledged this registry's significance, particularly for implant registrations in toe surgeries. He elaborates on the data collection process, including patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) such as MOXFQ and EQ-5D, to enable better data analysis, although challenges remain in ensuring comprehensive patient engagement and compliance.

As of now, the registry has successfully accumulated data from nearly 20,000 patients, indicating a steady growth in utilization as surgeons recognize its value. The presentation highlights the importance of improving patient outcomes and the registry's alignment with the outcomes project, aiming to standardize data collection and facilitate deeper analysis of surgical techniques and patient experiences. Makwana concludes by reaffirming the registry's objective of enhancing quality care while minimizing surgical risks.
