Charcot Foot Surgery
Description
Mr Donatas Chlebinskas gives his expert insights and discusses surgical interventions for Charcot foot, which is indicated in cases of severe foot deformity, recurrent ulceration, or non-healable feet. However, surgery is advised against during the acute phase unless there is a need for infection-related debridement. The main objectives of surgery include achieving a stable, traceable, and ulcer-free foot. Surgical options available include cystectomy for prominent bones, arthrodesis combined with robust fixation for unstable joints, and osteotomy for correction of deformities. Amputation is considered only for cases deemed non-salvageable. Due to the poor quality of bone in these patients, any fixation used must be very strong, and post-operative care will necessitate extended periods of offloading.
