Circular Frames in the Treatment of Periprosthetic Fractures of the Tibia

Description

In this presentation, Bethan Pincher discusses the challenges and treatment options for periprosthetic tibial fractures, which are increasingly common due to an aging population and the rise in lower limb surgeries. The presentation highlights that pre-existing implants may complicate surgical approaches and fixation methods, leading to high complication rates. A study of 15 patients from a limb reconstruction database is presented, noting their demographics, types of injuries, and treatment results. Patients underwent various surgical procedures involving circular frames that facilitated successful treatment even with the presence of existing metalwork. The results are encouraging, with a 100% union rate and no cases of deep infection recorded, contrasting sharply with lower rates associated with internal fixation methods. Overall, the findings suggest that circular frame fixation might offer significant benefits over traditional methods in treating these complex injuries, preserving soft tissue health and enabling patients to maintain mobility during recovery.
