Clinical Research

Description

In this session, Dr. Harvinder Singh, a shoulder and elbow surgeon from Leicester, discusses the dynamics of engaging in research within the orthopedic field, emphasizing its importance in improving patient outcomes. He is joined by distinguished faculty members, Professor Bridget Scammell and Professor Subodh Deshmukh, who provide insights into various avenues for trainees to participate in research.

Professor Scammell, the first female professor of orthopedics in the UK, explains that medical trainees have numerous opportunities to get involved in research, starting from their undergraduate days and extending through academic positions like academic foundation trainee roles. She highlights the significance of team collaboration in research and how trainees can take part in multicenter studies, which often provide robust funding and resources for their involvement.

Professor Deshmukh shares insights on patents related to innovative medical devices. He differentiates between design patents and utility patents, emphasizing the steps to securing patents, the importance of viability testing for commercial ideas, and the costs associated with pursuing patents.

As the discussion progresses, the participants delve into the challenges of securing grants and the need for collaboration with research design services to navigate the complexities of research proposals successfully. They emphasize creating robust research questions that involve patient input, thorough study designs, and well-structured methodologies to enhance grant applications.

Ultimately, both professors encourage fostering a research culture among trainees, urging them to aim for impactful projects rather than taking the path of least resistance, thereby contributing to the advancement of orthopedic knowledge and practice.
