Creation of an Osteoporotic Vertebral Fracture Pathway
Description
The presentation delivered by Louis Hainsworth at Musgrove Park Hospital focuses on the development of a new pathway for managing osteoporotic vertebral fractures. Hainsworth outlines the need for this initiative, highlighting that 17% of spinal emergency clinic visits were related to these fractures, leading to high demand on resources. The study involved a retrospective review of six months worth of patient records, revealing that the majority of patients received X-rays and none required surgical intervention. The new pathway includes direct referrals to the spinal team with immediate X-ray availability and the provision of TLSO braces when appropriate. Patients who meet the criteria can follow up on their own without needing further imaging, while others are directed back into the spinal emergency clinic. Hainsworth emphasizes the anticipated benefits of reduced hospital visits and X-rays, decreased clinic demand, and a positive environmental impact, ultimately aiming to enhance patient care and optimize clinic availability.
