Deep Infections Following Osseointegrated Reconstruction: Microbiology Profile and Outcomes

Description

In this presentation, orthopedic consultant Muhammad Adeel Akhtar discusses the outcomes of a project he undertook during his fellowship in Sydney, focusing on deep infections post-osseointegrated reconstruction. Adeel explains that his study examined data from 667 patients treated between 2010 and 2019. He shares that the prevalence of deep infections was documented at 1.9%, primarily affecting male patients with a mean age of 55. The majority of infections were polymicrobial, with staphylococcus being the most common organism detected. Following surgery, notable outcomes included a high conversion rate to above-knee amputation in 38% of patients. Adeel concludes by expressing gratitude to his colleagues in Sydney and thanking the audience for their attention.
