In this presentation, Tony Clayson shares his experiences in developing orthopedic services globally as a consultant at Wrightington Hospital. He discusses his leadership of the pelvic trauma unit and involvement in Greater Manchester's Major Trauma Clinical Effectiveness Committee. Tony outlines his motivations for engaging in global surgery work, highlighting his interest in teaching and the urgent need for trauma services in developing countries, particularly Ethiopia.
Tony explains how he got involved with the World Orthopedic Concern (WOC) and the opportunities he found to contribute to the healthcare system in Ethiopia. He describes the pressing issue of trauma cases in Ethiopia, with significant mortality rates, and his role in supporting the establishment of a major trauma center in Hawassa, a key city for trauma management.
Over the past five years, Tony has been involved in multiple teaching visits, offering training and mentorship to Ethiopian colleagues while also facilitating research projects and curriculum development. He emphasizes the importance of sustainability in medical training and service development, notably through the AO Reverse Fellowship program.
Tony reflects on the impactful collaborations he has fostered with various institutions and colleagues, highlighting his active participation in improving orthopedic education and practice in Ethiopia.
