Digital Optimisation of Pre-Assessment - The NOC PAC Project

Description

In this session, Andrew Price expresses gratitude to the BOA and the OUH NHS Trust for facilitating a discussion on optimizing pre-assessment processes within the context of the Nuffield Orthopedic Center. He describes the strategic challenges that emerged in recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the backlog of surgeries due to increased waiting lists. Price highlights the inadequacies of the existing pre-assessment process, which was overwhelmed and led to patients repeatedly returning for assessments.

To address these issues, the center implemented a pre-assessment triage system that utilized virtual consultations to efficiently identify patient needs early in the surgical pathway. This innovation allowed for smoother scheduling and reduced the burden on clinical staff by reallocating resources effectively. Furthermore, digital tools, including a screening questionnaire, facilitated data collection and streamlined the triage process.

Through the collaboration with various NHS trusts and academic networks, including winning an NHS Innovation Fund award, the initiatives resulted in significant improvements. These included a reduction in appointment no-shows, acceleration of patient readiness for surgery, and notable cost savings per patient. The strategic changes not only improved operational efficiency but also aligned with environmental goals through reduced carbon footprints. This project exemplified how leveraging digital innovation and teamwork can effectively enhance elective surgical recovery processes.
