Effect of Incivility On Performance In Orthopaedic Surgery

Description

In this talk, Diairy Kader highlights the pressing issue of workplace incivility in the healthcare sector, particularly focusing on surgical environments. Kader candidly discusses the increasing challenges faced by healthcare professionals, such as overwhelming workloads, resource shortages, and the pressure of managing electronic records. He emphasizes that a toxic work environment leads to significant stress and mental health issues among surgeons and medical staff, which in turn affects patient care and outcomes.

Kader presents alarming statistics revealing that a large percentage of medical students and junior doctors experience distress, with a notable suicide rate among doctors substantially higher than the general population. Through personal anecdotes, he illustrates how incivility manifests in everyday interactions, including rude comments and dismissive behavior, which can create an atmosphere of intimidation.

Furthermore, he explains how incivility not only deteriorates workplace morale but also has dire consequences on patient safety, leading to an increased risk of medical errors. Kader urges for a cultural shift towards civility and mutual respect in healthcare settings, advocating for open communication practices, like 'radical candor', to foster a healthier working environment.

Concluding his address, Kader calls for greater awareness and attention from governing bodies to the detrimental effects of workplace hostility, stressing that the well-being of healthcare professionals directly influences patient care quality.
