GOAST Study

Description

This presentation, delivered by Kriti Singhania, features speakers Samantha Downie and Vicki Cherry discussing the impact of a research study titled GOAST, focusing on gender disparities in surgical training. Initially, Singhania highlights the importance of previous talks at the BOA and transitions into introducing the speakers, who have remarkable backgrounds in clinical research and training in orthopedics.

Samantha Downie, the chief investigator, presents findings that show a prevalent gender difference in operative autonomy among surgical trainees, spurred by earlier research in JAMA that observed such discrepancies. Vicki Cherry follows, discussing the study's goals, methodologies, and participant data, which includes insights into trainees' experiences, particularly those who took time out for personal reasons like maternity leave or research.

Absorbing audience interaction reveals concerns regarding operational skills upon returning from out-of-program leaves. Results exhibit a generally encouraging trend towards equality, although some differences in opportunities among genders are apparent. The two speakers conclude with a call for further engagement from the audience to continue examining these critical issues, emphasizing the need for a culture shift in surgical training that affirms equality and diversity for all participants.
