Gamification in Medical Education: Just Fun and Games?
Description
In this engaging presentation, Catriona Luney, an ST4 medical student and education fellow at the University of Buckingham, discusses innovative strategies to enhance medical education through gamification, particularly in learning musculoskeletal radiology. She recalls her own educational experiences in dark lecture theatres and expresses the desire to make learning more enjoyable and interactive for students. Luney implements a gamified approach where students work in groups to interpret radiographs, with one student drawing based on their peers’ descriptions, fostering teamwork, competitive spirit, and deeper engagement with the material. The results show that a significant percentage of students found these methods helped with information retention and made learning more enjoyable, highlighting the positive impact of bringing fun into educational environments. Luney encourages other educators to adopt similar methods to invigorate learning experiences in medical schools.
