Journey of a Clinical Academic

Description

In this presentation, Ashley Scrimshire, an ST6 clinical academic and part-time research fellow at the University of York, shares insights from her journey in academia, reflecting on the complexities of balancing clinical training with research. Starting with her adjustment to being among more advanced colleagues, Ashley likens her experience to navigating "spaghetti junction," emphasizing the divergent paths and decisions faced by trainees. She highlights the importance of seizing opportunities, building networks, and seeking collaboration within trainee bodies and clinical trial units (CTUs) for support in research endeavors. Ashley discusses the challenges of time management, funding acquisition, and finding suitable supervisors essential for success. She stresses that teamwork in research is crucial, and that resources and collaborative partners are accessible within the academic community. Aspiring clinical academics are encouraged to create a personal network, as it opens doors to opportunities and financial resources needed for research. Ultimately, Ashley conveys the ongoing struggle to maintain a balance between clinical responsibilities and academic aspirations, underscoring the importance of teamwork and seeking guidance along the journey.
