Limb Reconstruction Group Physiotherapy Class: A Service Evaluation

Description

This web video transcript outlines a presentation by Kyle Cole regarding a service evaluation of a group physiotherapy class specifically designed for limb reconstruction patients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Cole introduces the unique nature of the service, noting that group physiotherapy for this patient cohort is available in only a few specialized centers in the UK. He emphasizes the lack of prior research on such specific patient experiences and the need to gather insights for improving patient care.

The physiotherapy class occurs weekly and accommodates patients at various recovery stages, including those using mobility aids. The session is described as circuit training-like, allowing multiple patients to engage while also featuring additional spaces for one-on-one rehabilitation and a clinic for ongoing patient care by specialist nurses.

Methodologically, a 10-item questionnaire was created to gather qualitative and quantitative insights, aiming for 20 completed responses over four weeks. Analysis of the collected data was performed to identify themes related to patient experiences and satisfaction. Results indicated high levels of recommendation and positive feedback on the service, revealing four primary themes: sense of community among patients, support from staff and peers, the enhancement of confidence leading to increased independence, and the class's challenging nature.

Cole discusses patient feedback revealing improved use of limbs and reduced feelings of isolation through shared experiences in the group. Some challenges were acknowledged regarding room conditions and the physical demands of the class. He also highlights adaptations made in response to COVID-19, including the introduction of a high-quality video conferencing system allowing remote participation, thus ensuring patient safety.

In closing, Cole invites further contact for additional information about the service, emphasizing the importance of continuous feedback to enhance the physiotherapy experience for limb reconstruction patients.
