Management of Neglected Hand and Wrist Trauma - Challenges in Treatment

Description

The presentation, led by Amit Tolat, the President of the British Indian Orthopedic Society, introduces the Indian Summer event—an initiative that showcases the talents of Indian orthopedic surgeons. Founded in 2004, this triannual event has grown out of the recognition of the significant contributions made by Indian professionals in the NHS and beyond.

The session features multiple expert speakers with varied specialties, ranging from pediatric orthopedics to hand surgery. The first speaker, Shailesh Gupta, a seasoned orthopedic surgeon from Indore, presents on a range of complex cases, including mal-unions, non-unions, and various dislocations of the wrist and hand. He discusses intricate surgical techniques he has developed through extensive experience and addresses challenges faced in treating these injuries, particularly emphasizing the importance of creating a 'physiological environment' for healing.

Gupta highlights several case studies, detailing the pre-operative conditions, surgical strategies, and post-operative outcomes for his patients. After reviewing the setbacks and uncertainties associated with non-union fractures, he concludes with key messages about embracing challenges in surgical practice and maintaining an adaptable mindset in patient treatment. Throughout, he underscores the interplay of skill, knowledge, and adaptability in achieving favorable outcomes for patients.
