Meniscal Tears

Description

Mr Sam Oussedik gives his expert insights and discusses the characteristics and considerations surrounding meniscal tears, particularly in relation to their position and orientation within the meniscus. He outlines various types of tears based on their plane (horizontal, vertical, radial) and their location (posterior horn, body, anterior horn), as well as the depth of the tear. Key factors in determining whether to repair a tear include the stability of the construct that can be achieved and the tissue's healing capacity, which is often diminished in degenerate tears compared to fresh tears. Mr Oussedik emphasizes the importance of blood supply in healing potential, noting that as individuals age, the blood supply recedes, leading to decreased healing ability. He also mentions that vertical tears in the posterior horn of the meniscus generally have the best healing capacity due to favorable alignment and blood supply, while radial tears are more challenging to stabilize in the context of joint forces.
