Mid-Third Clavicle Fractures: A Novel Pathway Identifying Patients Benefitting from Surgical Fixation

Description

This video presentation by Hasan Daoud, a CT1 in Wakefield, discusses the management of mid third clavicle fractures based on work conducted during his foundation years in Derby. Hasan outlines a pathway designed to identify patients who may benefit from surgical fixation, highlighting the controversial nature of managing these fractures. He presents data collected over two years (2017-2019) involving 141 patients divided by fracture shortening (less than or greater than 15%). The study results indicated that a higher percentage of patients with over 15% shortening required acute operations compared to those with under 15%, and conservative management in the higher shortening group resulted in nonunion rates that necessitated surgery later. The proposed clinical pathway standardizes care, emphasizing early intervention for patients at risk of nonunion, and has shown promising results in reducing nonunion rates and minimizing unnecessary clinic visits post-implementation. Overall, the presentation aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of targeted treatment approaches in improving patient outcomes.
