Mortality Following Fractured Neck of Femur in The Peri-Centenarian Population
Description
In this presentation, Moritz Lebe discusses findings from a research study examining mortality rates following neck of femur fractures among patients aged 99 and older, often referred to as the peri-centenarian age group. Conducted at Broomfield Hospital, this retrospective case series evaluated patient outcomes from September 2009 to September 2020, with data sourced from the National Hip Fracture Database and health records. Key points include a 16% in-hospital mortality rate, a comparison of demographic factors between sexes, and the implications of timely surgical intervention on patient recovery. Lebe highlights that most patients discharged were able to return home, although mortality increases post-discharge, plateauing after one year. The study suggests that, despite higher in-hospital mortality rates compared to younger patients, these outcomes are more favorable than previous studies. Lebe concludes emphasizing the importance of prompt and cohesive care for enhancing the quality of life and mobility for elderly patients post-fracture.
