Mortality Following Osseointegrated Reconsruction of Lower Limb Amputees

Description

In this presentation, Dr. Mohammad Adeel Akhtar, an orthopedic consultant from NHS Fife, Scotland, discusses a research project from his fellowship in Sydney on post-operative mortality in lower limb amputees undergoing osseointegrated reconstruction. Dr. Akhtar explains that this advanced surgical technique aims to enhance mobility and functional outcomes for amputees but is associated with various post-traumatic psychological issues and comorbidities that can lead to complications and mortality.

The study was conducted with a prospective cohort of 641 patients who underwent lower limb osseointegration between 2010 and 2019. Dr. Akhtar presents demographic details, causes of amputations, and post-operative assessments, concluding that six patients (four male, two female, average age 57) were identified with a mortality rate of 0.93%. The leading causes of death included suicide and cardiac failure. He emphasizes the importance of ongoing medical and psychological support for amputees to mitigate the risks related to their procedures. The presentation ends with gratitude towards Professor Munjed Al Muderis for his mentorship during the fellowship.
