Description
In this presentation, Bob Handley discusses the challenges and opportunities in improving care for patients with hip fractures and non-ambulatory fragility fractures (NAFF). He emphasizes the importance of equity in care, advocating for recognition and treatment of all types of fragility fractures rather than focusing solely on hip fractures. Drawing on personal anecdotes and statistical data such as bed occupancy related to hip fractures, he argues that a comprehensive approach to managing fractures can significantly enhance patient mobility and outcomes. Handley also critiques existing care pathways, suggesting a shift towards a collaborative model that includes healthcare professionals from various disciplines to ensure all patients receive adequate rehabilitation and support. He calls for stronger advocacy at trust board levels and among healthcare leaders to confront existing disparities in treatment while also advocating for embedding geriatricians and physiotherapists more deeply into fracture care teams to ensure the best possible outcome for all patients.
