Description
The presented VTT details a talk by Dr. Ajay Malviya regarding the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on hip preservation surgeries, focusing on the National Non-Arthroplasty Hip Registry (NAHR). Dr. Malviya opens by explaining the purpose of the registry, which collects outcome data from hip preservation procedures like arthroscopy and osteotomies, boasting over 16,000 patient records. He illustrates a significant decline in surgeries during the pandemic, particularly from February to April 2020, attributing this trend to pandemic-related restrictions.
In response to the situation, a protocol was established to ensure safe surgical practices when resuming operations, targeting young and fit patients as primary candidates. The initiative underscored adherence to national guidelines while actively monitoring post-operative outcomes through a specially designed questionnaire, focusing on COVID-19 testing and complications.
Data collection began in May 2020 and included multiple touchpoints with patients at pre-op, 30 days, and 90 days post-surgery. The results demonstrated a compliant rate of 99% for COVID testing prior to operations and low post-operative COVID-19 infections, with only 1% experiencing complications within the first month post-surgery. Dr. Malviya concludes by celebrating the effectiveness of NAHR's data collection efforts during the pandemic and its potential as a model for future registries.
