Osteoid Osteoma
Description
In this discussion, Professor Dan Perry elaborates on osteoid osteoma, a common tumor found in pediatric orthopedics. He describes the distinctive characteristics of the tumor, known as the nidus, which displays a clear margin of transition, making it identifiable against normal bone. This tumor typically causes nocturnal pain in children that is alleviated by nonsteroidal medications. Increasingly, the treatment involves radiofrequency ablation, a minimally invasive procedure where the tumor is effectively burned away. Occasionally, surgical removal is performed, revealing a characteristic blue tinge at the center of the tumor; Perry notes that this surgical approach can be a rewarding experience in the operating room.
