Osteonecrosis: Surgical Options

Description

Dr Jonathan Chlebinskas gives his insights whilst discussing the topic of osteonecrosis and its relation to hip resurfacing arthroplasty. Dr Chlebinskas explains that historically, osteonecrosis has been a contraindication for hip resurfacing, as poor blood supply to the femoral head can lead to complications and failure of the prosthesis. Additionally, it highlights that females may have a higher complication rate when undergoing this procedure. He also addresses the concern of elevated metal ion levels post-surgery, noting that initial increases can be normal but significant spikes could indicate problems with the prosthesis requiring further investigation. The importance of tracking these levels over time is emphasized for ongoing patient monitoring.
