Description

The patellofemoral joint plays a crucial role in knee functionality, with the patella making limited contact with the trochlea, leading to high pressures and potential pain. The joint relies on both dynamic and passive stabilizers for stability, and abnormalities in surrounding structures can lead to instability. Assessment of the patella's position relative to the trochlear groove is vital, with MRI providing a more direct understanding compared to traditional radiographs. The medial patellofemoral ligament is essential in preventing lateral displacement of the patella; dislocations typically occur laterally due to its deficiency after such injuries. Chronic instability often necessitates surgical intervention, including ligament reconstruction and repositioning of the patella. Understanding the biomechanics involved helps refine treatment approaches for optimal knee stability.
