Play Your Paeds Right for Postgraduate Orthopaedic Exams

Description

This session involved a combined meeting of the FRC's mentor group and orthopedic research UK. The evening began with an introduction to the session's focus, which included presentations by Miss Jo Darnell and Mr. Anish Rashica, two consultants in pediatric orthopedic surgery. They aimed to provide insights on successfully navigating pediatric orthopedic exams, particularly relating to upcoming assessments.

Engagement with participants was encouraged; an interactive element was incorporated where attendees could post questions in the chat for real-time responses. The discussion highlighted how to effectively approach pediatric orthopedic cases, such as managing slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), requiring familiarity with relevant classifications like Herring.

The talks covered various aspects of pediatric orthopedic conditions, from diagnosis to treatment options, emphasizing practical approaches for exams. Key points included strategies for addressing slipped epiphyse, outlining the management of acquired hip diseases, and discussing syndromic clubfoot management through the Ponseti method. Attendees learned to identify critical clinical signs and the importance of understanding various treatment protocols.

There was a lively question-and-answer segment where attendees queried about different aspects of patient management regarding hip conditions and the implications of various orthopedic surgeries. The experts underscored the need for clear patient education, particularly in understanding long-term management strategies for pediatric patients. Overall, the session was informative and emphasized the need for a solid grasp of pediatric orthopedic principles for both clinical practice and examinations.
