Posterior Capsule Repair

Description

Professor Dominic Meek gives his expert insights and discusses the importance of repairing the posterior capsule and external rotators during total hip replacement via a posterior approach. Historically, these structures were not routinely repaired; however, evidence from over 30 years suggests that repairing them significantly reduces dislocation rates of the hip. The Mayo Clinic and other studies support the idea that repair minimizes the risk of early postoperative dislocation. Factors such as larger head sizes and improved postoperative rehabilitation protocols also contribute to reduced dislocation risks. Professor Meek highlights the potential risk of sciatic nerve injury during surgery, emphasizing the importance of identifying the position of the sciatic nerve and ensuring it is not inadvertently damaged during the repair process. However, it is noted that the actual act of repair does not increase the risk of sciatic nerve injury.
