Replacing Broken Hips: Which Implant and Which Cement?
Description
In this presentation, Matt Costa discusses recent evidence on the use of arthroplasty for treating displaced intracapsular fractures of the hip. He opens with a light-hearted apology for his late arrival before diving into the topic. Costa highlights the findings from the HEALTH trial, which compared total hip replacement to hemiarthroplasty, concluding that most patients with an intracapsular fracture could be effectively treated with a hemiarthroplasty. He notes the importance of being selective in treatment choices and emphasizes that a cemented hemiarthroplasty is often sufficient and offers improved quality of life and lower complication rates compared to other methods. Costa also touches on studies evaluating different types of bone cement, concluding that high-dose dual antibiotic cement does not demonstrate a significant advantage over standard cement while incurring higher costs. Overall, he advocates for the use of hemiarthroplasty with bone cement to ensure better patient outcomes and cost-effectiveness.
