Rheumatoid Arthritis
Description
Professor Dominic Meek gives his expert insights and discusses the management of a patient with rheumatoid arthritis who is undergoing surgery. The patient is currently on methotrexate, a common medication for inflammatory arthropathy. The main focus is on the appropriateness of continuing methotrexate during hip surgery, as evidence suggests it does not negatively impact wound healing, unlike its use in knee surgery where it is often stopped. Professor Meek stresses that discontinuing methotrexate could lead to increased pain and flares in other joints, without reducing the risk of joint infections. He also advises consultation with the patient's rheumatologist and recommends maintaining the current dosage of methotrexate throughout the surgical process.
