Serum Inflammatory Markers
Description
Professor Dominic Meek gives his expert insights and discusses the serum inflammatory markers related to parasitic joint infection following total hip arthroplasty. He highlights that while white cell counts do not significantly aid in the diagnostic process, traditional tests like ESR are non-specific and often unhelpful due to their elevation in various conditions. CRP is noted as the conventional marker used, although its superiority is questioned compared to the more expensive alpha defensin, which is gaining traction but still debated in effectiveness. Interleukin 6 measurement has shown some promise in sensitivity but is rarely available outside specialized centers. Consequently, for practical applications, most clinicians rely on CRP, occasionally in conjunction with alpha defensin.
