Survey of Impacts of COVID-19 on Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery Practice Globally

Description

In this presentation, Marissa Gibbard discusses the findings from a global survey examining the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on pediatric orthopedic surgeons. She begins by acknowledging the traditional territories of the local First Nations and expresses gratitude to their communities. Gibbard outlines the significant disruptions faced by the healthcare sector, emphasizing the reduction in surgical care and elective services that pediatric orthopedic surgeons had to navigate due to the pandemic's guidelines.

Surgeons adapted by focusing on urgent cases, transitioning to virtual outpatient appointments, and managing limitations on in-person care, resulting in a drop in the number of surgeries performed. The survey included responses from 460 surgeons across 45 countries, revealing a considerable decline in clinical activity during lockdowns but also indicating a swift adoption of telehealth solutions. Gibbard reports that many surgeons found ways to maintain training and research activities despite the restrictions.

The follow-up survey indicated an overall resumption of surgical activities, with a notable return in outpatient appointments, although challenges in research recruitment persisted. Gibbard highlights wellness initiatives implemented by hospitals to support staff amidst the pandemic. She concludes with reflections on the lessons learned from the survey, emphasizing the need for better preparedness for future health disruptions, encouraging ongoing infrastructure development for virtual care.
