TMT Arthrodesis

Description

Mr Donatas Chlebinskas gives his expert insights and discusses the risk of nonunion after TMT (tarsometatarsal) arthrodesis, which ranges from 11% to 15%. It highlights that the TMT joint is particularly susceptible to nonunion due to high biomechanical loads. Key risk factors for nonunion include diabetes, smoking, the use of plate-only fixation, malalignment, inadequate bone grafting, and compression techniques. Mr Chlebinskas suggests that using screw fixation can enhance union rates, especially in patients with diabetes who may have Charcot neuroarthropathy, stressing the importance of selecting long segments and ensuring rigid, durable fixation.
