Technology Versus Technique - Will ChatGPT Replace Orthopedic Triage Nurses?
Description
This presentation from the ISTA 2024 conference held in Nashville, discusses the research undertaken by a group concerning the potential role of ChatGPT in orthopedic triage nursing. The inquiry is motivated by the increasing efficiency and financial constraints faced by orthopedic triage nurses, especially in the context of declining reimbursements for procedures such as total joint arthroplasty. The speaker, Stephen W Chenard highlights common questions posed by patients in these scenarios, such as post-operative care and complications, and compares the responses generated by ChatGPT with those provided by trained triage nurses.
The research collected responses for a series of predefined prompts involving typical patient queries and analyzed these responses with validity checks from orthopedic surgeons, who were unaware of the source of the responses. Results show no significant difference in safety or completeness between ChatGPT's answers and those of the orthopedic triage nurses across a variety of inquiries.
Dr Chenard concludes that ChatGPT is capable of matching the quality of advice given by human nurses, suggesting the integration of AI into medical fields as a way forward to enhance efficiency in patient care. Furthermore, the implications of using domain-specific large language models to assist in orthopedic medicine are explored, positing a future where such models could provide assistance directly within patient medical records.
