Tendon Pathologies in Sports Radiology

Description

In this presentation led by Professor Waqar A. Bhatti, a Consultant MSK and Sports Radiologist from Manchester, the topic of focus is the increasing prevalence and complexities surrounding tendon pathologies in sports radiology. The session outlines important points including terminology clarification, radiological assessments, advanced treatment options, and a summarization of key learnings.

Professor Bhatti emphasizes the significance of understanding tendon pathologies, highlighting that 1% to 2% of adults typically present with lower extremity tendinopathy, which is increasingly common across various sports. The presentation divides tendon conditions into stages such as reactive tendinopathy and degenerative tendinopathy while discussing their different management strategies.

The session explores the pathophysiology of tendinopathy, identifying risk factors such as mechanical overuse and environmental impacts, genetic susceptibility, and the critical role of biological responses within the tendon structure itself. Important imaging techniques, including ultrasound for evaluation, and newer advances such as ultrasound tissue characterization are discussed for accurate diagnosis.

Additionally, advanced treatment modalities like PRP injections and prolotherapy are presented, portraying their effectiveness for tendon repair and recovery, particularly in athletic populations. Professor Bhatti concludes the session with an affirmation of future directions in pharmacological treatments and regenerative interventions aimed at better management of tendon health.
